“Fado” is the Portuguese tradition-it’s an entire genre of extremely melancholy songs that for centuries were not written, but simply individually passed down from the poor and middle class women of Lisbon to the next generation. It takes on many different forms, and no one will directly tell you these are all interconnected, but if you spend time in places like Argentina (where Tango is from-which was a musical/dance tradition born from the brothels in the extremely poor port side neighborhood of Buenos Aires), Brazil, Spain, and Portugal you’ll see how the cultures have their own unique takes on these expressions of life. There are particular fascinating musical traditions in the Spanish and portuguese cultures and descendant territories associated with the richness of life and the intensity of emotion, often with thematic connections to harbors or the oceanic experience. I’m arriving to this quite late but I’ll add a bit of context.
